There is uncertainty at the heart of human beings, an anxiety that leads us down wrong paths of disappointment and dissatisfaction. This uncertainty is our perception of the pervasive impermanence of the apparent world.
Buddha taught that understanding the truth of impermanence is the most valuable teaching. Although we conduct ourselves as if we will live forever, temporarily cloaked in comforting ignorance, it is only by contemplating and penetrating deeply into the fact of impermanence that we begin to see things as they are. Through this insight, our frantic clinging and manipulations cease and the mind is prepared to realize one’s true nature.
“Impermanence” is one of the Four Thoughts That Turn the Mind towards Truth. Khenpo will present an overview of the subject which will prepare students for deeper study and meditation.
Fearing death, I went to the mountains.
Over and over again I meditated on death’s unpredictable coming,
And took a stronghold of the deathless, unchanging nature.
Now I have lost and gone beyond all fear of dying!
