Teachings from a text by Patrul Rinpoche, "The Ultimate Great Perfection, the
profound method for Buddhahood known as the self-liberating meditation."
Traga Rinpoche says the meaning of the text is evident in the title of the text. He said these are profound Trekchod ("Cutting Through")
Dzogchen ("Great Perfection") instructions that lead to Buddhahood and are described by Patrul Rinpoche in a way that is easy for ordinary people to understand.
Venerable Traga Rinpoche is an accomplished Dzogchen master, having received profound
foundational and the most advanced teachings from some of the greatest living masters of Tibetan
Buddhism -- including His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche, Khenchen Jigme Phuntsog and
many others -- and has completed many retreats.
In early 1984, Traga Rinpoche received full gelong (monk) ordination from the
Nyingma master Khenpo Munsel, who gave him the detailed teachings on Dzogchen Cutting Through the
Resistance to Primordial Purity. Khenpo Munsel gently looked at Traga Rinpoche and said, "Your karmic
propensity is to practice Dzogchen. I am your karmic lama. If you can meditate, you have today found
the way to liberation in one life. You will never find something like this even if you went to look
for it with your horse's hooves encased in steel. Spend one year near me and meditate." For the next
seven years, Traga Rinpoche did retreat near Khenpo Munsel, and practiced Trekchod ("Cutting
Through"), Togyal ("Passing Over"), and many other advanced practices.
At Garchen Rinpoche's request Traga Rinpoche served as the retreat master for at least six years
at the Garchen Buddhist Institute in Arizona, and now resides at his own Dharma Center, RigDzin
Dharma Foundation, in Albuquerque, NM.

Patrul Rinpoche is one of the great figures of 19th century Tibetan Buddhism. Although
he was the reincarnation of a high lama, at the age of 20 he left behind his monastery, and
well-appointed residence, and for the next 50 years lived the life of a wandering hermit and yogi of
no fixed abode. He sought teachings from many great masters of the day and became a scholar of
profound learning.
Patrul Rinpoche combined the practice of the Great Perfection with a tireless implementation of the
Mahayana teachings on wisdom and compassion so powerfully advocated in Shantideva's
Bodhicharyavatara (The Way of the Bodhisattva). In fact, "the Bodhicharyavatara was his constant
companion and it is said he taught it more than 100 times during his life.
"His commitment to the path of renunciation, compassion, and bodhicitta were legendary - so much so
that many people came to regard him as the incarnation of Shantideva himself. For it was difficult
to imagine a more perfect embodiment of the teachings of the Bodhicharyavatara. This great master
devoted his life entirely to study, contemplation and meditation for his own benefit and teaching,
debate and composition for the sake of others."
